Editor’s First Words
Greetings Clan MacLennan and a very happy Spring. As we move into spring and the Festival Season kicks into high gear, please take a minute to check out the Festivals in your area. If you don't regularly attend an event, take the time to go this year. Be sure to find the Clan MacLennan tent and say hi. If you don't find a Clan MacLennan tent, consider hosting the tent next year and helping us expand! It's tough to 'grow' an organization if we are not actively seeking new venues and new ways to encourage members of all ages to join and we definitely want to grow and expand!. Today's Festivals are so much more than they were in years past with Celtic rock bands, adult and youth athletic field events, all types of music and chances to try out the instruments, games with prizes for the younger ones, great food and the chance to meet other MacLennnans. So consider attending an event and if that event does not have a Clan MacLennan tent, contact me at:
DumSpiroSpero_1@msn.com
We will walk you through the steps of sponsoring a tent, help you obtain the Convener Reimbursement Clan MacLennan now offers and let you know what is needed to run a well-organized tent. It's fun, it's easy and it's a great to meet Clan. We have a new member and convener in CA who will convene her first clan tent this coming weekend. We will have a short piece from her regarding her experiences with convening in the next newsletter.
It is now time to renew your memberships! Clan MacLennan now functions according to the traditional calendar - January 1st through December 31st, so the 2007 memberships are now needing renewal. Please take a moment to renew your membership by clicking the Membership Link below and remember, membership in Clan MacLennan USA makes a wonderful gift for someone of any age!

A Message From The Chief
Chief’s message – April 2008
Dear Clansfolk
Once again I find myself sitting in our living room at Dores looking out across Loch Ness and deep in thought considering the highlights of the past few months. Life always seems to be extremely busy but at times like this, having to consider what I have actually being doing over the past few months, I often draw a blank as to interesting news to share with you!
We have had some good weather over the past couple of weeks which has made a pleasant change. Although there has been very little snow this year, especially in the Inverness area, there has been a lot of rain and some flooding. Loch Ness once again flooded for a period of a few days and managed to erode yet more of our garden here in Dores, finally prompting me to start a beach defense strategy. We have been experiencing flooding since the 1980’s and are at a stage now that by not carrying out beach defense work, we are going to start loosing a lot of the garden. Lorna, never one to take matters seriously is keen to resist carrying out such works in the hope that the Loch will flood the cellar within which she can have an indoor swimming pool! Anyway, the daffodils are out and the days are getting longer and the clocks have changed, one of my favourite times of the year!
Life has continued to be busy but it is the constant activities that seems to drive me and whilst I complain about being too busy, my failure to say no to getting involved in further tasks makes me realize that it is in fact my own fault that I am busy all of the time! I am enjoying my work where my time is split 50: 50 between working for public utilities carrying out land acquisitions and pipe line compensation claims and then private estate management and consultancy. The latter mainly involves valuation and planning matters as well as an increasing amount of crofting law matters. All of these take me all over the Highlands & Islands. I was recently back in the Western Isles and last week found myself in Dunnet Head which is the most northerly point on the British mainland. By the end of our meeting, I was unable to write any further notes due to the bitterness of the cold wind!
Aside from work, I have been busy in my capacity as Chairman of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Area Committee for the Highlands & Islands. This weekend we have our annual dinner in Inverness which is the highlight of the year in the social diary. I am still involved in the local Community Council where most of our time is taken up by planning and development matters and the “Rockness” music festival which takes place just outside Dores on the shores of Loch Ness. This year the anticipated crowd capacity is in excess of 40,000. I am still active in my capacity with the Territorial Army, predominantly the pipe band. I have my annual tests coming up which means having to take to the field for a few weekends to do shooting, patrolling and other activities which I now feel I am getting too old to partake in! On the piping front, we have a couple of competitions coming up as well as another trip to Luxemburg for the Military Tattoo this coming weekend. The band will then be touring the Western Isles later this summer as part of our two week annual camp.
I have been continuing to tick away at various DIY projects on the house over the winter, mainly in preparation for the summer weather when I hope to get more painting carried out as well as many other projects, both on the house at Dores and our bothy in Shieldaig on the West Coast. The task of keeping up with property maintenance is tedious and once one job is finished, often another problem springs up creating an endless list of “to do” jobs.
Kirsteen and Lorna are both well. We are pleased to announce that Kirsteen and her husband James are expecting their first child, due in June. Kirsteen has not been working since the start of her pregnancy and I suspect she is now getting restless wishing June would come sooner rather than later. James seems to be thrilled that his dinner is on the table each night when he gets home from work as well as having a permanent driving to hand! The two of them spent Christmas in New York and then came home to celebrate the New Year at home in Fochabers where I joined them. Lorna is currently in Cuba with her boyfriend Robin. They seem to spend an incredible amount of time travelling about and will be out there for two weeks. They have already booked a holiday in Poland for June so that they have something to look forward to when they return! Lorna is working in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness (when not on holiday) and seems happy with her work.
There has been a lot of interest in the Clan Gathering in Edinburgh in July next year. This event will be the first of its kind and we are hoping that many Clansfolk will come over and join us at this event. The gathering will take place in Edinburgh on 25th and 26th July 2009. Details can be found at www.clangathering.org
Our intention is that we will have a MacLennan Clan tent at this event where Clansfolk can congregate throughout the weekend. In addition, it is proposed that we have a function of our own on Friday 24th July in Edinburgh. The exact format of this event has yet to be finalized but details will be provided in due course. This information will be made available on the Clan Web Site. We hope to see many of you over from the USA for this event.
I have been impressed to see the Clan Association in the US becoming so vibrant and we are delighted that many of those who have put in a lot of work in recent times will be rewarded for their services to the Clan by possibly being presented with the Chief's Medal. This Medal is to be introduced by Clan MacLennan USA and will be presented to Clan members who have dedicated time and effort to furthering the Clan worldwide. There will be a set criteria which members must achieve in order to become eligible for the medal and these will be awarded by myself on recommendation of the elected Committees of the Clan organizations.. It is important that people are given recognition for their services to the Clan and I am honoured that this is going to be done through the introduction of the Chief's Medal.
Wishing you all the best.
Yours aye,
Chief Ruairidh
The Chief's Award
Chief Ruairidh D. G. MacLennan of MacLennan and Clan MacLennan USA would like to announce the creation of the 'Chief's Award' to be awarded to those members of Clan MacLennan Organizations worldwide whose performance as a volunteer, leader and/or mentor for Clan MacLennan Organizations worldwide is outstanding and as such, merits recognition by both the Clan MacLennan organization and Chief Ruairidh. This form of recognition is a medal hanging from a ribbon of Green and Gold - Clan MacLennan Colors - in the tradition of a military medal. The first 'Chief's Awards' will be presented by Chief Ruairidh at the Clan MacLennan dinner July 24, 2009 in Edinburgh prior to the 'Gathering'. If you have someone in mind who you think should receive one of the first 'Chief's Awards', then please forward their name and address to either Colleen or David or the appropriate organization.
The 'Gathering'
This is an event of a lifetime and Clan MacLennan USA will most definitely want play a role in supporting not only our Chief but Clan MacLennan worldwide at this event. Anyone interested in attending the 'Gathering' or wanting to serve on a '2009 Gathering Committee' should contact either David or myself. Here is a short piece from the website - a January Update to whet your interest!
Holyrood Park, Edinburgh
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of July 2009
The Gathering 2009 will take the form of an international clan gathering and the largest highland games ever held in Scotland, and will be one of the key events of Homecoming Scotland. It is estimated that there will be over 80 clan tents, with around 7500 clan and Scottish association members from around the world. The highland games will attract a further 30,000 people over the two days. It will showcase competitors from all disciplines that constitute a traditional highland games such as piping, dancing, and heavy athletics. The special clan ceremony will take the form of a clan parade on the Royal Mile culminating in a unique clan pageant on the magnificent esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.
Tickets
To attend the major events of The Gathering 2009 you will need to get hold of a 'Passport'. This includes entry to both days of Highland Games at Holyrood Palace, a place in the Clan Parade and a seat at the Clan Pageant on the castle esplanade.
Passports
Passports will go on sale via our website at the end of March but a pre-booking form is online now. We would encourage anyone who is keen to book their tickets prior to the general release that they fill in the form and post it back to us with payment details. This form is particularly aimed at large groups looking for tickets as you will only be able to buy 6 online.Full details can be found on the ticket page of our website.
Numbers in the Parade
We would like to reassure passport holders that whether you have 1 or 100 people in your clan group, everyone with a passport to The Gathering 2009 is welcome to join the parade. Additionally those without a clan affiliation will be able to walk as a group.
Children and Passports
All children are welcome to come to the parade and the pageant but they must have their own passports. However, we would like to make people aware that the pageant will finish around 10:30pm at night and children under 3 are free but they will be required to sit on an adult's lap during the pageant.

If your clan has not yet applied for a tent but would like to do so then please fill out the form available from our website and return to us before the 1st April 2008.
Letter from the President
April 2008
Ann and I have been back from Australia now for about two months, but it feels like we still haven’t caught up and got back into the groove.
It is a beautiful country and we were thrilled with the whole trip. But two highlights were in Melbourne and Sydney where we met with McLennans who are active with the Clan Association there. Read all about the McLennans we met and meet them in photos… I wrote a page on the web site that you can click to read:
For those of you who are receiving this in print and do not have computer access – not a problem! If you’d like to see the pictures and read about the Australian Clan, drop me a note and I’ll print out a copy and mail it to you. [David Jones, HC3-13418, Mexico Beach FL 32456].
Here in Florida, the “winter” is a busy season for my band [www.pc-pipes.com] with Highland Games and other events, and we have friends and visitors known as “snowbirds” who come here to the south to escape the snowy and cold winters.
And, as you see elsewhere in this Newsletter, there have been lots of Clan activities going on with the Executive… I am thrilled that we have volunteers in place to Chair and coordinate Youth, Membership and Merchandise.
Many of you will soon be hearing from Banning McKeon as we start the annual membership renewal process. The Executive voted to keep the annual dues at $20 for adults and $10 for children as well as $300 for Lifetime. These are certainly modest amounts, and are necessary to help us offset the cost of keeping in touch with each other and doing some modest recruiting to introduce ourselves to other clan potential members. The web site, postage and printing, helping Conveners with a bit of the cost they incur to represent the Clan at Games, advertising in COSCA etc.
Speaking of “recruiting”… new members have found us via the web site – a real thrill for those of us who have felt that we need a web presence to reach out to MacLennans. Our newest members hail from California and Texas and have young families, reaffirming our focus on Youth.
And that leads to a Membership issue that your Executive is discussing… a Family Membership. As this goes to press, we don’t have a solution, and I can’t guess what ideas will come out in the discussion. But I will be suggesting that if and when we create a new Family category and set its price we also provide an “upgrade option” so that if some members of a family have joined and paid their individual annual dues [$20 or $10 respectively] that they only have to pay the difference to bring their remaining family members up to full family membership. For example, if Mother and one child have joined and paid $20, and a Family were $50, Father and two other children could be added for another $20, bringing total paid for the year to $50. They would other wise have to pay $70 for 2 Adult and 3 Youth. Note: this is an example ONLY and just to illustrate the concept that I will ask the Executive to consider. Therefore, I encourage at least one member of a family to join / renew right away in the appropriate Adult or Youth category… that way, you stay in touch, and hopefully we can arrange upgrade to enable you to bring additional members in.
The Executive is also discussing details for an Annual General Meeting. Traditionally, this has been held at the Stone Mountain Games in mid-October, and earlier in several locations throughout the country and even Canada. But we realize that no matter where it is held, many cannot attend in person to participate. So, we started with Proxy voting for better participation. And an Executive that “meets” mostly by e-mail and telephone as well as written correspondence. We are contemplating an AGM this year that might not even have a physical location – publishing and printing the reports and proxies for elections might be viable. On the one hand, this makes more work during the year for the Executive, but the upside is that more gets done – via Executive discussion.
And “Executive discussion” leads me to a final point for this Issue… your Executive.
Like all of us, these 5 people in addition to me are all busy folks… some working and raising families, caregivers, parents, grandparents… some, like Marilyn and me are “retired” but sometimes wish we would like to go back to work for a “break” from hectic activities.
When I succeeded Win last year, I knew that no one person could get us to whatever goals we would seek – that it would take the help of many. And, we are a small group that is spread out across most of this great land, so not much can be accomplished in face-to-face meetings. So I determined that to “fan the fire” from the tiny ember that was glowing I ‘d need a lot of help. And your Executive has stepped up. I can’t thank them enough for the support they provide for the Association – for all of us. We’re still getting used to using e-mail and telephone to discuss ideas and make resolutions, but many things are being considered and getting done, thanks to them.
In closing, I wish each of you a pleasant Spring. And encourage you to find a few minutes to drop editor Colleen a note – each of you must have a Clan/family anecdote to share! And that includes from our Youth! We are a family organization, and I KNOW there must be a lot happening out there with our younger members – at school, in sporting and musical endeavors, whether or not they are Scottish. Please share them with all of us via Colleen. In your words – I’m sure Colleen as Editor is concerned with getting your input and getting it published here, not with grammar and punctuation!
David
I know I speak for all of us in the Association and Clan in extending to Don Waugh Jr., one of our At Large members of the Executive Committee, and his family our deepest sympathy and warm memories of his father. Adults In The Spotlight
New Adult Member
Kelly McClennan: I'm a Superintendent for ExxonMobil Drilling, and drill oil and gas wells. Currently I work for 3 weeks at a time in Sydney, Australia and the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. My favorite things are coaching and playing with/ my kids (Emily, 17, Kyle, 11, and Connor, 4). and traveling with my wife, Stacey. We are really getting excited about our 11 day whirlwind tour of the Scottish Highlands this summer. I've only been to Aberdeen once on business, so it will be fun to learn a bit more about the history of the country.
Youth In The Spotlight
We introduced Sarah (below) last fall as our first Youth Clan Member when she was awarded a Clan MacLennan Youth Membership and Scholarship so she could continue to study the Celtic Harp. Sarah has had several competitions since then and has done well as she won first place in the Apprentice Division of the National Scottish Harp competition at the Stone MT. games! Sarah is playing frequently and local Celtic events/fund raisers, helping to raise money so she can continue her study of Celtic music and the Celtic Harp. Sarah hopes to attend Harp camp this summer in Oberlin, Ohio and we sent her our best wishes.
New Youth Member
We have a new youth member from Texas - Kyle: Turns 11 on April 26th. Currently playing baseball for the Cy Fair Indians. He likes school, goofing off with his friends, and reading books. His goal for our family trip to Scotland is to meet a distant MacLennan relative.
Youth Pages
Welcome to the YOUTH PAGES! We are seeking youth of all ages to not only join Clan MacLennan USA but to get involved by acting as a Youth Photographer and sending us your photos of all things Scottish/Celtic. Send us a photo of your pipe band practice, or one of you competing in dance, or one of your family at a festival. Represent your Clan by participating as a Youth Reporter and write a short piece about your day at a festival or how it felt to get your first kilt or whether you want to learn to play the bagpipes, drums or harp. So join us, write to us, send a photo or two and get involved!
The Youth Pages are available on the Website at http://clanmaclennan.org and there is also a link on the main website to the Youth Pages. There are new Youth Pages every quarter with puzzles, coloring pages and interesting information for youth of all ages regarding Clan MacLennan, the Chief, Coat of Arms, and lots of other interesting topics. There are contests, drawings and prizes so please make sure your MacLennan youth views the Youth Pages and has a chance to participate, learn and win a prize too! Please bookmark the above link and visit the Youth Pages often with your children/grandchildren and enter to win!
The purpose of the Youth Pages is to educate, inform and promote interest in all things MacLennan and Scottish. The youth of today are the conveners, Chief's Lieutenants, bagpipers and drummers, dancers and leaders of tomorrow. We hope to provide information on a variety of subjects important to the Clan and Scots to youth of all ages and it is our goal to do that in fun, informative and interesting ways. We are always open to suggestions and appreciate your comments both positive and negative and we especially enjoy receiving the entries and papers from the youth.
Thank you McKinnley and Loren for sharing your pictures! We hope you enjoy your Clan MacLennan Bears. Thank you Jordan for your letter requesting information regarding Chief Ruairidh!

OUR FEATURED GAMES
Dunedin Highland Games April 12, 2008
I was able to make the trip again this year to Dunedin FL. Don Waugh Jr. of our Executive Committee and Pam Lorens had made the 300+ mile trip from Miami and already had the clan tent set up when I arrived on a gorgeous HOT morning... it eventually hit 87 while I was watching the band competition later that afternoon! Sunscreen was a definite requirement.
We had help again from wee Skye MacLennan... although the day was hot, it was also quite windy, and Skye had quite a job keeping even the small. Skye brought her Mom - Alex MacLennan - along and tells us that she is looking forward to her new sister arriving soon.
During the day, one of our visitors who is in Florida from the Buffalo NY area stopped by. WE exchanged information and I will be contacting his son and grandson who are in Buffalo and interested in hosting a tent at one or more of their area games... so perhaps we can expand into NY as well as our recent additions in CA and TX.
While it is always heartening to welcome new interest and members, what I find most encouraging is that, again, part of the interest is with the youngsters. They are the future of the Clan and our organization...! David Jones
We will be happy to include it in the next ‘Clan Piper’ in April!
